Johannesburg: Baragwanath Hospital
This page is devoted to the 'community' of generations of Jewish physicians and surgeons of Baragwanath, the huge, sprawling and bustling hospital to the southwest of Johannesburg, serving the population of the nearby townships of Soweto. They devoted their time and energy to caring for the overwhelmingly large and underprivileged population – as students, registrars, staffers and chiefs.
All those who had the opportunity of working there received the most extraordinary medical training, meeting with every kind of medical problem and surgical condition in quick succession. The 'chiefs' who worked there were legendary and young doctors were set up for life.
Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (colloquially known as Bara) is world renowned. Occupying around 173 acres with approximately 3200 beds, housed in 429 buildings and with a staff of nearly seven thousand, it is the largest hospital in Africa is the 3rd largest hospital in the world.
