Jewish Cemetery

There was no dedicated Jewish cemetery in Maitland, nor a cemetery dedicated solely to Maitland residents. In the earlier years, Jewish burials would have been in one of the cemeteries on Voortrekker Road, the biggest being the Maitland Cemetery (sometimes referred to as the Woltemade Cemetery) which occupied most of the area on Voortrekker Road between Kensington and Goodwood. The Jewish section, known as Woltemade Gate 8, was opened in the late 1890s.

From about the early 1940s, Pinelands No. 1 Jewish cemetery came into use. It lies behind the Woltemade Cemetery, separated by the railway line, and hence it is accessed from Pinelands and not from Maitland. Across the road from it is the "new" cemetery known as Pinelands No. 2, which came into use from about the early 1970s.

Details of burials in these cemeteries can be accessed via the Jewish Cemeteries Maintenance Board website, and in many cases photos of the tombstones are shown.
